| Language - Paralanguage |
Language Paralanguage is an art project, which explores the sound-world of the 44 official languages spoken in Europe; through a series of interviews with European nationals living in the UK who speak English as a second language. The project is a touring sound installation, which examines the phonetic and written characteristics of language through participatory processes.
Principally I am interested in the sheer wealth of languages existing in such close geographical proximity in Europe. The project is designed to energise debate regarding understanding of the myriad cultures that make-up contemporary Europe; issues of immigration and the multi-cultural project; and communication across linguistic barriers. “Language Paralanguage” is supported by Arts Council England, Artpoint & Dada South.

Paralanguage" refers to the non-verbal elements of communication used to modify meaning and convey emotion. "Paralanguage" may be expressed consciously or unconsciously, and it includes the pitch, volume, and, in some cases, intonation of speech. Sometimes the definition is restricted to vocally-produced sounds.
